Grants
You must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for each of these grants. It is important to note that federal grants are gifts of money that do not have to be repaid. However, if you have supplemental student loans, they must be repaid, but there are repayment plan options available for graduates.
Federal Pell Grant - This program is available to undergraduate students pursuing their first bachelor's degree. The amount you receive will depend on:
- your Student Aid Index (based on your FAFSA form),
- the cost of attendance (determined by your school for your specific program),
- your enrollment status, and
- your plans to attend school for a full academic year or less.
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) - These federal funds allow the college to award grants to undergraduates with exceptional need. Priority is given to students who receive Federal Pell Grants. An FSEOG does not have to be repaid. You must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by April 15th of each year.
Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant - Provides money to college or career school students to help pay their education expenses. However, Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grants have special eligibility criteria. You might be eligible if your parent or guardian died as a result of military service in Iraq or Afghanistan.
North Dakota State Incentive Grant - This program provides grants to help undergraduate students who demonstrate financial need. FAFSA serves as an application for the program. Students must be North Dakota residents attending a North Dakota college or university. Information is available from the Student Financial Aid Program, State Board of Higher Education, Tenth Floor, State Capitol, Bismarck, ND 58505.
