Don’t miss Almost, Maine.
LRSC Playmakers present romantic comedy Oct. 24-27.
Lake Region State College presents the heartwarming romantic comedy Almost, Maine by John Cariani Oct. 24-26 at 7:30 pm and Oct. 27 at 2:00 pm in the Robert Fawcett Auditorium.
The play reveals glimpses of life and love in the fictional “almost” town of Almost, Maine. The magical and mysterious northern lights highlight moments of endings and beginnings of relationships in a series of eight scenes between the lovable and realistic individuals from a small community in northern Maine.
The production is under the direction of April Hubbard.
Hubbard is thrilled to be the new director and instructor of Theatre at Lake Region State College. A North Dakota native, Hubbard returns to the Devils Lake area after living and working in the states of Michigan and Iowa as a theatre professor and director. Hubbard has a Master of Arts degree from Bowling Green State University, and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Theatre direction from the University of South Dakota and has directed many productions in community theatres and colleges.
“I have directed in every genre: Shakespeare, farce, comedy, serious drama and musical theatre. Some of my favorites are musicals, children’s theatre and Shakespeare and hope to add them to the regular season of productions at Lake Region State College.”
Most recently, Hubbard directed Mama Mia this summer at Minot State Summer Theatre. Also an actress, one of her most recent roles is in a two person adaptation of Macbeth that was performed at the Kansas City and Minneapolis Fringe Theatre Festivals.
Almost, Maine uncovers moments of fate that connect or split couples living in the fictional town of Almost, Maine. The play is a comedy with elements of magical realism: surreal symbolic moments that bring to light the beauty and mystery of falling in love and the pain and truth of unrealized connections. There are some hilarious and absurd moments and heartbreaking episodes within this collection of eight scenes that take place between 8:50-9:00 pm on a crystal-clear night in the deep winter of northern Maine. Each scene culminates in the beautiful and mysterious northern lights highlighting pivotal moments in the character’s lives.
“This script has a wonderful balance of absurd comic moments and touching and truthful sad moments. The characters are quirky and fascinating, and the cast is delightfully revealing the loveable eccentricities of these fascinating people,” Hubbard said.
