Lake Region State College students urged one another to wear orange shirts the week of Oct. 2nd in observance of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. October is also
the month for the LRSC community to celebrate Indigenous People Day on October 9th.
The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation started in Canada and was created to honor the legacy of the Inuit and Metis children in Canada, who were forcefully taken from their parents and sent off to residential schools between the 1830s and the 1980s. The day is celebrated to acknowledge the healing that is still taking place in the lives of those affected (nationaltoday.com). The official day to wear orange is Sept. 30, but with that day falling over a weekend, LRSC students decided to extend the shirt-wearing for the week.
The day is to stand in solidarity with survivors and against all forms of racism by wearing an orange shirt.
